SERVICES for YOU

Leg Injuries

Leg injuries can be very unpleasant and in addition to pain can cause you a great deal of inconvenience. Reduced mobility will normally mean that even when the pain has passed it will still be difficult for you to work and you may loose wages as a result.

Relatively straight forward fractures of the bones in the lower leg (tibia or fibula) will normally heal after a few weeks in plaster with the assistance of a crutch and perhaps some physiotherapy. Fractures of the thigh bone (femur) tend to be rather more problematic to treat and recovery times are somewhat longer.

Knee injuries are often difficult to assess as degenerative change may well be present pre-accident and could play a part in symptoms going forward. If the articular surfaces of the knee joint are affected then debilitating osteo arthritis may occur raising the possibility of a joint replacement in the future.

Unfortunately, some people experience complications in achieving consolidation of new bone at fracture sites. This can be due to the nature of the fracture, infection or just plain bad luck. This may result in a lengthy period of disability and the need for a bone graft. Other complications are caused if the injury extends to adjacent blood vessels and nerve supplies.

Blunt trauma can result in occult injuries such as “de-gloving”. Here the blood supply to the layer of fat under the skin can be disrupted causing underlying tissue to die. This can result in unsightly “contour” defects which appear like large hollows in the skin. This can be particularly distressing for younger women.

Serious leg injuries can be highly technical and pose difficult questions. If you have an accident and need to pursue a claim for leg injury compensation you need the help of a Solicitor who is experienced in dealing with such cases if you are to get the right result.
